FAQ - Ask Johnny

Frequently Asked Questions

What does dormant tree seed mean?

Dormant tree seeds are living seeds that naturally delay germination until specific environmental conditions are met. Most temperate tree species, including maples and pines, require cold exposure, moisture, and time before they will sprout. Dormancy is a survival adaptation, not a defect.

Are your seeds suitable for bonsai?

Yes. Johnny Mapleseed specializes in dormant tree seed suitable for bonsai. Many of our species are classic bonsai trees and respond well to pruning, wiring, and long-term training. Bonsai results depend on care, technique, and patience and are not guaranteed by seed type alone.

Do you ship year-round?

Yes. We ship year-round within the United States, typically within one to two business days of ordering. Dormant seeds ship safely in all seasons when stored properly after arrival.

Do you ship internationally?

At this time, we ship within the United States only.

Do you offer a germination guarantee?

Seeds are sold as-is and we do not guarantee germination. Germination depends on proper stratification, soil conditions, moisture, temperature, and time, all of which are outside our control.

We do stand behind our seeds and our customers. If you experience issues, we will work with you to identify possible causes and help you succeed.

My seeds did not germinate. What should I do?

First, do not discard your seeds or containers too early. Many dormant tree seeds require thirty to one hundred twenty days of stratification before they will sprout. Uneven or delayed germination is normal, especially with maples and conifers.

If you believe something went wrong:

  1. Contact us with your order number

  2. Tell us the species and the steps you followed

  3. We will review your process and provide tailored instructions

  4. When appropriate, we may offer replacement seed to support your success

Our goal is education, patience, and long-term customer relationships.

How long does it take for seeds to germinate?

Germination timelines vary by species. Some pines may sprout in two to four weeks, while many maples require sixty to one hundred twenty days or more. Some species germinate over multiple seasons. Tree seeds follow natural timelines and do not germinate uniformly.

Do bonsai seeds need scarification?

Most bonsai-relevant species do not require scarification. Japanese maple and trident maple do not require scarification, and most pines only benefit from soaking.

Some pine species and seeds with very hard seed coats may require mechanical or chemical scarification. Always follow the instructions provided with your specific seed, or reference our Bonsai Tree Seed Growing Guide before attempting scarification.

Improper scarification can damage seeds and should only be done when required.

What soil should I use for germination?

Seeds perform best in free-draining, fine-textured soil that retains moisture without compacting. Dense or waterlogged soil is a common cause of failure. Soil structure is especially important for early root development in seed-grown bonsai.

Can I grow these seeds as landscape trees instead of bonsai?

Yes. While our focus is bonsai, many species grow well as specimen or landscape trees. Bonsai techniques simply allow greater control over size, structure, and form.

Can I return seeds?

No. Seeds are living, perishable products and are not eligible for return.

What is your return policy on supplies?

Unused and unopened supplies such as soil, tools, and containers may be returned within ninety days of purchase. A twenty percent restocking fee applies.

Before returning any item, you must contact us to receive an RMA and specific return instructions. Returns sent without prior authorization may not be accepted. Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer.

How should I store seeds before planting?

Store seeds in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration is recommended if stratification will not begin immediately. Avoid heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.

Are these seeds beginner-friendly?

Many are, but growing trees from seed requires patience and realistic expectations. We welcome beginners and provide clear instructions, but bonsai is a long-term practice that rewards careful attention and time.

Why start bonsai from seed?

Starting from seed allows you to shape trunk movement early, develop natural nebari, manage roots from the beginning, and build a deeper understanding of tree biology. It is slower, but unmatched in long-term quality.

How can I get help choosing seeds or supplies?

You can contact us through our Contact page at any time. We are happy to help you choose species, understand dormancy requirements, or plan your next steps.
